Fun and interesting tour!

This tour was highly recommended to me by my uncle, and I’m glad I listened to him. It was amazing and so cool how as soon as you go underground, you can’t hear anyone in the Old Town anymore and how it got colder. It was fun to walk through all those ancient passages with a local guide and see a whole other side of Prague.

Reminded me of the Roman catacombs

If you liked the catacombs in Rome, this is for you. You walk through all these medieval passages and see ancient rooms, like kitchens and prisons. It’s a great tour. Our guide, Veronica, was also amazing and very knowledgeable, and you could tell she really enjoyed her job. Loved skipping the line as well. We got in right away!

Prague Underground Tour

WANDER AROUND THE UNDERGROUND PASSAGES OF PRAGUE

Your guide will lead you to Prague’s Old Town Hall, through which you’ll access the underground. But before entering, look up to see the building’s Astronomical Clock. It is a multi-color, three-part, ancient working timepiece. Then, walk inside the Old Town Hall and descend into the underground. You’ll wander through stone passageways and chambers. Your guide will point out ancient infrastructure that has been preserved since the 12th century. You’ll spot houses, kitchens, tanneries, breweries, and even a pub! While exploring these tunnels, you’ll feel like you’re in medieval times!

VIEW THE DARK SIDE OF THE UNDERGROUND

As part of this walking tour, your guide will show you a medieval dungeon. There, you’ll see ancient, painful torture devices used during the period. This is where criminals and religious prisoners, mostly protestants, were tortured. Nearby, you’ll also find the prisons, and your guide will point out some ancient graffiti. If you look closely, you’ll see a game of Tic Tac Toe!

LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PRAGUE

While exploring the underground, your guide will teach you the location’s history and answer all your questions. Did you know that in the 13th century, Prague’s street level was significantly lower than it is today? Because of the nearby Vltava river, flooding was a real danger, so earth was brought in to artificially increase the street level. Then, over the years, the city’s old street level became today’s underground!

ASCEND ABOVE GROUND, FULL OF UNDERGROUND MEMORIES

Step back onto street level and breathe in fresh air. The underground entrance is fairly central, so why not see some of Prague’s modern, beautiful architecture? The famous Charles Bridge is nearby, for example.

PRO TIP

Ask your guide to show you the room right under the Astronomical Clock. If you stop and listen closely, you can actually hear the distant cheers of the crowds waiting for the clock’s hourly show on the street above.

Did you know that a part of the Underground is used as a beer spa?

There’s one section of the Underground that’s been repurposed as a beer spa - a space where visitors literally soak in beer! Attendants prepare a mixture of beer, yeast, and hops for them to bathe. Of course, all while enjoying a mug of beer at the same time. The mixture has healing properties, and a 20- to 30-minute soak does wonders for the skin.

If soaking isn’t your thing, experience beer the classic way, by tasting it. A Prague brewery tour lets you sample a range of local favorites and learn how they’re made.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • The entrance to the underground is through the Old Town Hall, so you’ll also catch a glimpse of this historical building.
  • It’s a good idea to wear comfortable shoes, as the underground floor can be fairly uneven.
  • It is required for all visitors to carry a photo ID—either a passport, driver’s license, or national identity card.
  • Unfortunately, the tour is not accessible for pets and small children below school age.
  • Baby strollers are not permitted on the tour, simply due to the narrow passages and many staircases.
  • The Prague Underground Tour is selling out fast, so make sure you book your spot on time!

Meeting Point

To start your walking tour, meet your guide at our ticket office inside the Art Passage. The exact address is Male Namesti Square Nr. 459 / 11, Praha 1 Oldtown, and it’d be best if you arrived 5-10 minutes early.

PRO TIP

When you are walking through the dark rooms, look up at the stone ceilings and corners. You will notice dark, oily black patches and smudges on the rocks. This isn't modern dirt or mold. Those dark marks are layers of smoke stains left behind by torches and candles used centuries ago. Because these tunnels are protected from wind and rain, these burn marks have remained perfectly preserved.
